It was one of those rare times that Santana was home with just her father. Considering he worked pretty much all the time, her mom was usually the one in charge of looking after her and even though she’d totally sworn that she was twelve and would be perfectly fine if they just left her alone, neither of her parents thought that was a good idea. So, since her mom had some work thing to go to, her father begrudgingly gave up his Friday night poker game and was down in his office reading his medical journals or something.
All day, Santana’s stomach felt kind of funny. It wasn’t like any stomach pains she ever had before but she figured that maybe the new workouts she was doing for the junior Cheerios was working some muscles she wasn’t used to working. Since Brittany was at her grandma’s for her birthday, Santana was alone in her room and she laid on her bed eating a Kit Kat bar and watching some boring thing in TV.
Around 8:00, Santana started to feel like she was going to throw up. She went into the bathroom and gagged a little over the toilet but nothing came out. Instead, she figured she would just pee and when she pulled down her pants, she was shocked to see blood in her underwear. Immediately, she started to cry, even though she’d taken health class in school and knew what was happening. Still though, the fact that she actually had her period really freaked her out, even though Brittany had gotten hers two months ago. She thought of her Papi downstairs and knew she couldn’t go to him and her Mami wouldn’t be home for hours. There was really only one person in the world she wanted and after shoving some toilet paper in her underwear, she went into her parents’ room and took the phone to call Amy.
“Hey kiddo.” Amy answered, sounding super cheery like she always did when Santana called.
“Ames.” Santana cried into the phone. “Mami’s not home and I got my period. I don’t know what to do.”
“Don’t cry, it’s okay.” She soothed. “I know, it’s totally freaky when you first get it. But I promise, it’s not s big deal.”
“I put toilet paper in my underwear but they’re all full of blood and I don’t know how to get rid of it.”
“Okay, first, go in the bedroom and get new underwear and the comfiest clothes you have.” Amy instructed and Santana listened. “Now go in Mami’s bathroom, there are pads underneath the sink. We’ll start with that because it’s easier than dealing with tampons.”
“Okay, I got one.” Santana murmured, still crying a little.
“Now go back into your bathroom and change out of your underwear. It’s pretty self-explanatory putting a pad into it but tell me if you need help.”
“I think I got it.” She pulled the paper off the sticky tabs and got the pad situated in her underwear before she pulled them up and got her comfy sweatpants on.
“After you wash your hands, you’re going to want to soak your underwear in cold water, that’ll help get the stain out.” Amy told her and Santana listened. “Do you have cramps?”
“I don’t know, my stomach has felt weird all day.”
“I left some Midol in the bathroom cabinet the last time I was there, why don’t you—I’m sorry, Captain, I’m on the phone with my sister and it’s a little bit of an emergency, can you just give me a minute?”
“Oh God.” Santana groaned as she tried to open the Midol bottle, she was totally mortified.
“Just take one, you can always take another later if you’re still not feeling great.”
“Does your captain know?”
“He doesn’t know, but it’s okay, it happens to everyone.”
“I wish you were here, Ames.”
“I wish I were too.”
